After 22 years as a personal trainer, 19 bodybuilding competitions, and countless mud runs and challenges… you’d think I’d have everything “figured out” when it comes to fitness.
But like everyone else, my workouts and priorities have shifted over the years, especially since becoming a dad.
These days…
❌ I don’t train for hours a day.
❌ I don’t eat perfectly.
❌ I don’t follow any extreme plan.
✅ What I do focus on is consistency.
Most weeks I train 4 to 6 times. One of those might be a 30–40 minute workout, but most are only 15–20 minutes in my garage or in between training clients.
I break up my muscle groups across two workouts, so that even on busy weeks, every body part gets hit at least twice.
And over the last three weeks, things have looked even less ideal on paper… but here’s the crazy part — I finally broke through a plateau I’ve been stuck at for years!
The Only Thing That Changed? My Daily Steps.
With school out and our summer baseball coaching camps in full swing, my schedule is hectic. I’m on the field in the morning and afternoon, coaching for 3+ hours a day.
Normally, I average about 11,000–12,000 steps a day. But right now, Monday through Thursday, I’m averaging over 20,000 steps daily. That’s nearly double my usual movement.
Even with fewer weightlifting workouts and no special changes to my nutrition, I’ve dropped from 208 to just under 195… a 13-pound loss in three weeks!!!
The Lesson? Do the Best With the Season You’re In.
There are going to be seasons where your workouts aren’t perfect. Your food might not be dialed in. Your schedule might be chaotic.
And that’s okay.
What matters is how you adapt and find ways to keep moving forward, even if it looks different than before.
For me, it was shifting from focused gym time to more outdoor coaching and movement.
For you, it might be walking during kids’ practices, squeezing in 15-minute strength sessions, or staying consistent with your water and protein even if meals aren’t ideal.
If You’re In a Tough Season Right Now, Don’t Wait. Start With What You Can Do.
You don’t need perfect circumstances to get real results. You just need a strategy that works with your life, not against it.
